The Hot Spot - What is happening in the NZ Ergonomics and Human Factors Scene

Dec 2011

The HFESNZ 2012 Conference organising has more than started

You are warmly invited to attend the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society of New Zealand’s 17th Conference in Taupo 22 – 23 November 2012. The society’s conferences bring together researchers and practitioners with an interest in ergonomics and human factors. These conferences facilitate the sharing of experience and knowledge to progress research, develop research ideas, and to encourage the formation of networks for the overall improved quality of ergonomics practise. More information available here.

Moved house recently?

We would like to keep you informed but going to struggle if you up sticks and don't tell us. If you do move or change your email address or phone details, please contact us by clicking here

Want to be in the hotspot next month? If so please click here and send your details.

What are the rules? There are only 4 rules at the moment: keep it current, keep it NZ, keep it HF&E and no private advertising.

What is relevent? It can be research papers currently in print. New ergonomics or HF initiatives recently adopted by Business. Awards given to some of our Ergonomics Students - anything along these lines.

Welcome to the New Zealand Ergonomics Society

New Zealand Ergonomics Society (NZES)

This web site will help you understand what the science of ergonomics involves, and how ergonomics can be successfully applied in all aspects of society. This site also includes a list of ergonomics books and resource materials, and information about the New Zealand Ergonomics Society (NZES).

What does Ergonomics mean?

The word ergonomics derives from the Greek words 'ergon' (meaning work) and 'nomos' (meaning laws). Ergonomics is the scientific discipline concerned with the fundamental understanding of interactions among humans and other elements of a system, and the application of appropriate methods, theory and data to improve human well-being and overall system performance. Ergonomics is also referred to as human factors or human factors engineering.

The 18th World Congress on Ergonomics will be held February 12-16, 2012, in Recife, Brazil, a week before Carnival, the world-renowned Brazilian festival. The congress will be a joint conference with ULAERGO – the Union of Latin-American Ergonomics Societies and ABERGO – the Brazilian Ergonomics Association. ABERGO is the official host of the Congress and I have been delegated by them to Chair the Congress Committee.

This will be the first time in 54 years that the IEA Congress will be hosted in Latin America. We are very excited that this special event will take place in Brazil. We invite all ergonomists, faculty and interested researchers to participate in the congress.

The congress theme of “Designing a Sustainable Future”, expresses a current concern with the design of resources which aim to meet human needs while preserving the environment so that these needs can be met not only in the present but also in the future. As a discipline which is involved in the designing of the interactions among humans and other elements of a system, ergonomics must consider “sustainability” as a key aspect in optimizing resources to improve human well-being and overall system performance. So, one of the major challenges in the field of ergonomics for the 21st Century will be the design and management of systems that satisfy custom demands in terms of the requirements for human compatibility and at the same time consider sustainability.
