This will be held Tuesday 5th to Thursday 7th September, Massey University School of Design, Wellington.

The conference theme ‘Wellbeing – Design – Practice’ focuses on the knowledge and practice of human factors and ergonomics (HFE), used to enhance the wellbeing of people via excellence in design.

The conference kicks off with an informal ‘Registration Do’ (drinks and nibbles) from 6 to 9pm on Tuesday 5th – perfect for a low-key catch-up with colleagues both old and new (bring your partner).  The HFESNZ conferences are known for their friendly atmosphere, approachable people, and supportive nature – and we don’t intend to change that winning combination.  And because we always find that the lunch and tea breaks just aren’t long enough for all the conversations we want to have... this extra chat time will help to provide!

Day one’s keynote speaker is Kent Parker - Joint General Manager and Lead Designer at Formway Design Studio. Formway Design ‘translates key insights of human behaviour into highly desirable products’ with a user-centred culture marrying a rigorous design process, sensitivity to aesthetics and a passion for the environment. Kent’s design career has bridged product design, management and strategy and combined leadership and vision with creativity.  The 2013 winner of the Designers Institute of NZ’s ‘John Britten Black Pin’ Kent has a considerable design pedigree, and will share with us some thoughts about HFE in design.

Day two’s keynote speaker is Dr Joseph Bain - a Chartered Professional Engineer (mechanical) heading JSK Engineers in Christchurch. Dr Bain is co-founder and immediate past chair of the NZ Society for Safety Engineering, and committee member for the Maintenance Engineering Society of NZ. He will address the designer’s responsibilities under the Health and Safety at Work Act (2015) and the place of hazard identification and risk assessment as essential elements of the design process.

Both keynote speakers will remind us of the breadth of skill that is required for excellence in design, and the need to consider the work and function of design teams to incorporate and address all design elements.

Programme - there will be a wide range of sessions (click here to view):

  • Main sessions titled ‘System and Product Design’ fill both mornings. You will be enthused and informed by details of design projects from seats to streets, and from anthropometric models to legal aspects – delivered from students to experienced HFE and other professionals. Presentations will update us on the programmes and developments from government agencies: WorkSafe NZ (the health and safety regulator); ACC (injury insurance and prevention); and HASANZ (the peak organisation for professionals working in the health and safety sector), so you will understand how the HFE role is viewed and fits with these systems in New Zealand. 
  • Afternoon sessions include ‘Physical Ergonomics’ spanning injury prevention and the moving and handling of people; a broad ‘Mixed Practice’ medley of cognitive, environmental, and organisational issues that will have something for all ‘flavours’ of HFE practice; and a session allowing us to explore the work and functioning of Society Clusters – the Health Ergonomics Cluster has kicked off, with proposals for a Student/New Professional Cluster, and a Design Cluster (and possibly others) on the table. Professor Stephen Legg will share some thoughts as he nears retirement from his Massey University teaching role.

Conference dinner on Wednesday 6th will be a feast for the senses – join us at Coco, in the magical Roxy Cinema (Best Cinema in NZ Award 2013) at the heart of movie-mad Miramar! Shuttle buses will whisk us away to soak up the Art Deco design and the extraordinary Weta Workshops interior features. If it doesn’t get your creative juices flowing along with your salivary juices – check your pulse as you are probably dead. (The conference dinner is part of the standard registration cost).

Accommodation - Conference delegates are advised to arrange their own accommodation in the surrounding area - some have already booked at the CQ Comfort Hotel in the top of Cuba Street (surrounded by great food and coffee), and the Distinction Wellington Century City Hotel in Tory Street (a little more up-market) or the Marksman Motor Inn by the Basin Reserve are also great options. A web search will identify a good range of alternatives within easy walking distance.

Conference Venue – the conference is hosted by Massey University’s Wellington Campus by the School of Design.
